The Foundation is Building

Women’s flag football continues to be one of the most popular emerging sports as more and more high schools, colleges, and universities embrace the sport. This has begun to pave the way to a hopeful future inclusion in future Olympic Games. As more schools begin the process, women’s flag football will likely be a mainstay in the NCAA Championships and the Olympic Games.

King University Bristol, Tennessee

King University in Bristol, Tennessee, has recently launched its women’s flag football league.  “Women’s flag football is growing very rapidly at the youth and high school level. The NFL at the highest level is supporting it, as well, like the Tennessee Titans have been a big help to us, said David Hicks, Athletic Director for King University.  The NCAA is supporting it. It’s going to be an Olympic sport in 2028 in the Los Angeles games,” Hicks continued,  “The NCAA has the goal of having it as a championship sport by that time too. It’s just a lot of fun to be at the ground floor of these conversations and continue to provide for student-athletes.”

Like King University, the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) added girls flag football as a sanctioned sport to come next year – which in turn is opening the door for more colleges and universities to begin the program and have enough players to compete.

Increased Popularity and Accessibility

Flag football provides an inclusive platform for women and girls to participate in a sport traditionally dominated by men. Without the physical contact inherent in tackle football, flag football offers a safer alternative that appeals to a broader audience.

Investment and Sponsorship

Increased investment and sponsorship from brands and sports organizations have provided the necessary resources for the sport’s development. This financial support has enabled better facilities, training programs, and promotional activities, all of which contribute to the sport’s growth.

Empowerment and Role Models

The sport has produced role models who inspire young women and girls. Successful female football players and coaches are increasingly visible, showcasing that women can excel in all forms of football.

It’s an exciting time for the sport as women’s flag football is growing in popularity. There are many reasons which include inclusivity, organized support, media representation, health benefits, community aspects, role models, and financial backing. These factors together create an environment that encourages more women to participate and excel in the sport.
