Why She’s Special
Aaliyah Chavez is a generational talent with a rare combination of elite scoring ability, basketball IQ, versatility, and leadership.
Number One Player in the Country
Chavez is a 5’11 point guard from Lubbock, Texas and had a record-breaking career at Monterey High School, finishing her 2024-25 season with 4,796 career points, 1,279 rebounds and 771 assists.
Her dominance on the court has earned her prestigious honors, including the 2025 McDonald’s All-American, Naismith Prep Player of the Year and Gatorade Player of the Year.
Why Oklahoma?
Offers from South Carolina, LSU, UCLA, and Texas, among other top-ranked programs, flooded in. Still, Aaliyah ultimately chose the Sooners after watching them take down Florida Gulf Coast in the first round of this year’s NCAA Tournament.
“They play fast, and they like to shoot, and if you watch me play, I love to shoot and I play fast, so it just kind of matched how I played,” Chavez explained.
A Game-Changer for Oklahoma
As a newcomer to the SEC, Oklahoma is making it clear that they are ready to compete at the highest level. Securing the No. 1 recruit in the country is a major statement as the Sooners continue their March Madness run into the second week of the tournament.
With Chavez’s elite scoring ability, high basketball IQ, and dynamic play style, Oklahoma is building a program that could seriously impact the SEC and beyond. The Sooners’ future just got a whole lot brighter.
