The Arizona Wildcats women’s volleyball team continues its remarkable postseason journey, advancing to the Great 8 of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship (NIVC).
With an electrifying victory in the third round, Arizona secures the right to host the next showdown, bringing another thrilling match to their home court in Tucson.
A Path of Determination
Arizona entered the NIVC with something to prove after narrowly missing out on the NCAA Tournament. Undeterred, the Wildcats have showcased their resilience and talent throughout the tournament, defeating formidable opponents to keep their championship dreams alive. Their recent victory, marked by precision attacks, impenetrable defense, and undeniable team chemistry, sets the stage for what promises to be an intense quarterfinal clash.
Key Players Step Up
The Wildcats’ success has been fueled by several standout performances. Carlie Cisneros played her all-around role like she always does. The freshman had six kills, an assist, an ace, and a block to go with her 10 digs. She was third on the team with 7.5 points. Junior outside hitter Jordan Wilson led the Wildcats’ offense with 11 kills.
The team’s balanced attack and ability to adapt under pressure have been crucial to their run. Coach Charita Stubbs praised the team’s focus and effort, saying, “Our players have shown incredible heart and determination. Hosting the Great 8 is a testament to their hard work, and we’re excited to bring this level of competition to our fans.”
“I just can’t be sad about (not being in the NCAA Tournament) and be happy that we’re actually in this position,” she said. “So maybe after it’s all over and done with, I’ll sit back and waddle and cry. But what I can tell you is that…I have a spreadsheet already going of every team that was selected for the tournament with their RPI, KPI, Massey, and their where they rank in the conference so that we can schedule better if you will, so that we’ll be more favorable in the committee’s eyes.”
Her players have their eyes on that future, too.
The Road Ahead
The Wildcats now turn their attention to Wyoming, a team equally hungry for the title. Arizona’s home-court advantage, bolstered by their passionate fan base, could prove pivotal in this high-stakes matchup.
The Great 8 showdown is set to take place in Tucson on Wednesday, December 11th, at 6 p.m. MT.
