Ferroviario de Maputo (CFM) surprised the 2023 champions, Al Ahly Sporting Club (AHL), with a heated performance to win the championship. The 10-day tournament, which brings together the best women’s basketball clubs across the continent, was concluded on December 15.
Ferroviario de Maputo (CFM) Dominance at the Games
The Maputo-based basketball team, CFM, had a great run during the games, finishing the tournament unbeaten. The team narrowly won its opening game against the REG of Rwanda with just a 4-point difference (78-74). It’s game two against Jeanne D’Arc of Senegal, which was a walk in the park as they tied the team to only three points in the first quarter and four points in the fourth quarter. The game ended with a thirty-four-point difference in favor of CFM (64-30). The team secured a sweeping win against ASB Makomeno of DR Congo. They outscored the team throughout the four quarters and held the team to just three points in the fourth quarter.
The game ended (88-38) in favor of CFM. The team again met Jeanne D’Arc in the quarter-finals, which beat 65-44. It played against APR of Rwanda for the semifinals, which had a stacked roster and was poised to have a great show. APR lost by six points despite outscoring the team in the third quarter by 15 points. Their incredible attention to detail and depth in the squad showed more in the championship game against the Al Ahly Sporting (AHL) squad. The championship game started off slow for AHL, who could not keep up with the raining 3-pointers from their opponents in the first quarter.
However, AHL outscored CFM in the second and fourth quarters but couldn’t secure the win. CFM had an 11-point difference, which were free throw points awarded at the last minute.
Ranking Games
With CFM as the Champions, the team established itself as the number one women’s basketball club in 2024 and AHL as second. This is the third continental championship for CFM. APR won by two points against the host team, ASC Ville de Dakar, to claim the third position.
