On January 14, 2025, the University of Houston Women’s Basketball team achieved a significant milestone by defeating the No. 24-ranked Oklahoma State Cowgirls 79-76 at the Fertitta Center in Houston.
Game Highlights
The Cougars started strong, establishing an early six-point lead. However, Oklahoma State responded with four consecutive three-pointers, taking an 18-15 advantage. Houston closed the first quarter tied at 18-all. In the second quarter, the Cougars surged ahead, outscoring the Cowgirls 21-10 to lead 39-28 at halftime. Houston extended their lead with a 19-4 run in the third quarter, entering the final period with a 62-42 advantage. Oklahoma State mounted a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, outscoring Houston 34-17, but the Cougars held on for the win.
Key Performances
Sophomore guard Kierra Merchant led the Cougars with 20 points and four steals. Redshirt sophomore guard Gigi Cooke contributed 16 points and five rebounds. Graduate guard Eylia Love added 15 points, while graduate guard Laila Blair scored 10 points, including three three-pointers and a season-high seven assists. Blair is now five three-pointers away from breaking Brittney Scott’s school record of 226 made three-pointers.
Oklahoma State’s Effort
Despite the loss, Oklahoma State showcased resilience. Sophomore guard Stailee Heard led the Cowgirls with 17 points, while senior guard Anna Gret Asi and junior guard Micah Gray each contributed 16 points. The Cowgirls’ fourth-quarter rally fell short, as they could not overcome the deficit.
Looking Ahead
This victory significantly boosts the Cougars as they continue their Big 12 Conference play. The Cougars will return to the Fertitta Center for a two-game homestand against Texas Tech on January 22 and Kansas on January 25.
