The Tempo Just Got Bigger
Lilly Singh has joined the ownership group of the WNBA’s Toronto Tempo and will serve as the team’s Chief Hype Officer. She will work to increase fan engagement and excitement around the team. Singh is a Canadian media personality and entrepreneur known for her YouTube career and television talk show.
Owner and Chief Hype Officer
Singh has become a co-owner of the Toronto Tempo and will also serve as the team’s Chief Hype Officer, focusing on boosting fan engagement and excitement. According to the Tempo, Singh’s role as Chief Hype Officer will involve “building and amplifying excitement for the Tempo on and off the court, including cultivating the fan community, curating in-game rituals, and celebrating the sport of women’s basketball.” Singh’s partnership with the Tempo is a strategic move to capitalize on her online fame and entertainment status to generate greater fan interest and enthusiasm.
A Perfect Choice
Singh believes that her personality is exactly what the Tempo needs to enhance excitement and fan engagement. “I think if you were to ask any of my friends or family, ‘what is Lilly known for,’ they would say ‘Lilly’s everyone’s biggest hype woman,’” Singh said in an interview last week. “I just love cheering on people, but namely I love cheering women on. I’m an over-the-top person, and I think that’s exactly what you need to be a team hype officer. That means cheering on the team at the games, bringing some of my international friends to the games and talking about the Tempo on and offline. I love basketball and I love Toronto. I’m a Toronto girlie through and through.”
Toronto Connection
Singh’s ties to Toronto, where she was raised in Scarborough, add a local element to the team’s ownership. The Toronto Tempo is an expansion team in the WNBA, marking the league’s first franchise outside the United States. Singh is the newest member of the Tempo’s ownership group, which already includes Serena Williams, Sukhinder Singh Cassidy, and Larry Tanenbaum.
