Wildcats are 4th Salt Lake City WFA Team

The Salt Lake Wildcats have officially signed on as a full member of the Women’s Football Alliance and will be playing in the WFA beginning with the 2025 season.

Based in Salt Lake City, Utah, the Wildcats will be competing in the Pacific region for 2025.

The Wildcats will be the fourth WFA team to call Salt Lake City home, following the Utah Blitz (2010-2019), Utah Jynx (2012-2013) and Wasatch Warriors (2023-present).

This initiative is being spearheaded by the Utah Girls Tackle Football League (UGTFL), which aims to provide a platform for female athletes looking to continue their football careers after high school. The Wildcats will compete in the WFA starting in the spring of 2025, allowing talented players from Utah to showcase their skills at a higher level.

Salt Lake City Significance

Over the last decade-plus, Salt Lake City has emerged as a true hotbed for women’s tackle football thanks in large part to the rise of the Utah Girls’ Tackle Football League (UGTFL), a non-profit all-female league that offers girls the opportunity to play football from 3rd grade all the way through 12th grade.  Growing more and more each year since its establishment in 2015, the UGTFL has seen more and more young female players wishing to continue their football careers long after high school graduation, but thus far limited opportunities for them to keep on the cleats.  Because of this, the UGTFL staff and management have taken it upon themselves to start up their own adult women’s tackle football team, creating a pathway for the UGTFL alumnae and continuing the competitive environment with which they are already familiar.

“We are thrilled to start our new journey with the WFA,” Wildcats President Laura Goetz said.  “Our research into various leagues led us to the WFA, where we found amazing opportunities and benefits that were provided for each of their teams. The WFA is genuinely committed to ensuring the success of women in football, and we have certainly felt their dedication throughout the process of establishing our new team.”

Preparing for 2025

Being prepared for a competitive atmosphere, the Wildcats eagerly anticipate every challenge ahead, from the battle for SLC supremacy with the Wasatch Warriors to unforgettable showdowns with perennial Pacific powers the Mile High Blaze, Nevada Storm, Cal War and other teams in the area.  With the game in their system since childhood and their eyes on adding to the Beehive State’s women’s gridiron accolades by bringing home the state’s first WFA National Championship, the Wildcats know that they are up for the quest ahead, and are ready to make their charge not only for gridiron glory, but also to serve as the most shining gridiron heroes for women and girls in the Wasatch front, the whole state of Utah, the Rockies, the USA and the whole world!

As Goetz continued, “By creating this opportunity for the graduates of the UGTFL, we are not only providing them a place to continue their love for football but also anticipating a high level of performance that was developed within the girls league. We believe that the WFA’s resources and supportive environment will empower our players to excel further with their football careers. We look forward to the possibilities that lie ahead and are eager to contribute to the women’s football community.”

Salt Lake Hot Market for WFA

The Wildcats presence enhance opportunities for female athletes in the region. This addition not only strengthens the WFA’s commitment to promoting women’s football but also provides a platform for local talent to showcase their skills and compete at a higher level. The inclusion of Salt Lake City reflects the growing interest in women’s sports and the increasing support for female athletes, paving the way for a bright future in women’s football.
