Beyond the Tennis Court
From taking on the tennis court, Serena Williams has made her way into the WNBA. The franchise announced Monday that Williams had joined the WNBA expansion team Toronto Tempo’s ownership group. “I am thrilled to announce my ownership role in the first Canadian WNBA team, the Toronto Tempo,” Williams said in a statement.
Williams continues to break barriers and accomplish new achievements within her career. “This moment is not just about basketball; it is about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes – I have always said that women’s sports are an incredible investment opportunity. I am excited to partner with Larry (Tanenbaum) and all of Canada in creating this new WNBA franchise and legacy.” Williams added.
Williams Back in Canada
Williams made her professional debut in Canada in 1995, starting her record-setting career. She claimed 73 WTA Tour-level singles titles, including 23 major women’s singles titles, the most in Open Era. This time, she’s back, claiming a new role and breaking new barriers. According to Toronto, Williams’s role will be to create team merchandise and design jerseys. The Toronto Tempo is honored to have someone join the program who is an icon and role model to so many. This wouldn’t be Williams’s first time stepping outside the tennis court. Williams already owns stakes in Angel City FC, Miami Dolphins, and Los Angeles Golf Club. Williams continues to break barriers and show people that you don’t have to be one-dimensional and can chase any goal you desire.
The Toronto Tempo Season Debut
The Tempo were confirmed last May as the WNBA’s 14th franchise and the first to be based outside the US. Their debut will be in 2026, and they will play games at Coca-Cola Coliseum in downtown Toronto. Many are excited to see what ideas and contributions Williams will make to this new program.
