KC Current 1 – 1 Bay FC
KC Current took an early lead with Beatriz Zaneratto scoring in the second minute. This was her second goal of the NWSL season and was celebrated with the signature Cristiano Ronaldo pose. She displayed great composure in receiving the ball from midfield before striking from outside the box into the bottom left corner. Debinha slipped past the defense in the 32nd minute to build on the momentum KC Current had generated. Within five minutes, KC Current was awarded a free kick just outside the penalty box. Debinha aimed for the top right corner, completing her brace and increasing the goal difference.
Less than ten minutes into the second half, Bay FC scored from a corner kick, which was followed by Penelope Hocking hitting the backside of the bottom right corner of the net. After several shots and attacks, Temwa Chawinga managed to cross the ball from the left side of the penalty box into the right side of the net, sealing the win for the KC Current.
The game ended with 18 shots taken and seven on target by the KC Current. Despite the high number of shots, the KC Current had a possession rate as low as 39% compared to Bay’s 61%. Bay FC sits in 12th position with only one win, one draw, and six losses. The KC Current maintained their top position on the table.
Other Results
The 2024 season champions, the Orlando Pride, are in second place and drew 1-1 against the North Carolina Courage. NCC had an early lead, which they maintained throughout the game, only conceding a goal in the last three added minutes. The Utah Royals and Chicago Stars continue to struggle this season, losing their last couple of games and drawing a few, placing them at the bottom of the table.
This Weekend
The NWSL continues this weekend, with the KC Current facing off against the Orlando Pride in a heated home game for the Pride. The Pride are desperately seeking a win to maintain their second position on the table, as they are just one point away from dropping to third place, occupied by the Washington Spirit. On the other hand, the KC Current has made a strong case for being the top contender for the NWSL championship this year. This will be an opportunity for the team to test its depth against one of the toughest squads in the league.
