The NWSL was back in action last weekend after the USWNT completed its two friendlies against China and Jamaica, which gave the league an international break. The KC Current continued to defend their position as table leaders, beating Gotham FC 2-1. The Chicago Stars and Utah Royals continue to struggle at the bottom of the table, with the Chicago Stars registering a draw against Angel City while the Utah Royals lost to Racing Louisville.

KC Current 2 – 1 Gotham

The KC Current had an early lead with Michelle Cooper scoring in the third minute and Temwa Chawinga securing the second goal in the 11th minute. Cooper received assistance from Temwa within the penalty box to shoot in the bottom left corner. And in the 11th minute, Cooper returned the favor, passing an assist to Temwa, who netted the ball.

The first half ended 2-0. In the second half, Gotham sought a goal, and in the 50th minute, it finally scored, but the goal was nullified after a VAR review. In the 90th minute, Vanessa DiBernardo accidentally scored an own goal in an effort to shake off the continuous attacks from the Gotham forwards.

Gotham had a better time with the ball at 62% but failed to convert any of its 11 shots. Its persistence in attacking the KC Current earned it 11 corner kicks compared to Kansas’s only two. The team currently sits in 10th place with three wins, three draws, and five losses. They are set to play against the Utah Royals this Friday in an away game. This marks their third consecutive loss.
