Temwa Chawinga Given a Heroic Welcome in Malawi

Temwa Chawinga, the 2024 NWSL MVP, returns home to Malawi for the holidays.

With the season-ending and the festive atmosphere building up, Temwa Chawinga decided to fly back home for the holidays. 

The 2024 NWSL MVP and Golden Boot winner was accorded a hero welcome back in her home country, Malawi, where she landed last Wednesday. Plus, the striker whose inaugural season in the NWSL was remarkable with the Kansas City, who fell short in the finals after losing to the Orlando Pride.  

Temwa Heroic Reception at the Airport

Among the dignitaries welcoming her at Kamuzu International Airport was the Malawi Women’s Federation Football President, Adelaide Migogo, accompanied by other officials from the Ministry of Sports. The Malawian National team player held a press conference upon her arrival at the Bingu International Convention Centre, where she announced a new partnership with FreshWater Project International. Fresh Water Project International is a Non-Governmental Organization based in Malawi whose goal is to make clean, fresh water accessible to everybody within the Malawian communities.

Temwa’s commitment to be a champion on and off the soccer field is admirable as she continues to be a beacon of hope for young girls and women in Malawi and on the continent. 

Temwa Using her Platform to be a Voice for Many

While at the press conference, she took a stance against the lack of professionalism and poor leadership in women’s soccer on the continent. She took a strong position against the Council of South African Football Associations (COSAFA), a South African-based tournament under the Confederation of African Football (CAF), for its policies, restricting athletes like Barbra Banda from playing freely on the continent. Barbra is a Zambian player with Orlando Pride who recently won the BBC Women’s Football Player of the Year

Temwa continues to be a force to reckon with on and off the field, as she is vocal in her community as a champion for women’s sports. Her parents were also at the welcoming ceremony. She will spend her time doing community work to grow the sport and empower women in her community.
