Wimbledon Day 4 Recap
Day 4 of the women’s singles at Wimbledon proved to give fans more excellent tennis while shaking up the top players, including the exit of a Top-10 player.
Top-ranked Simona Halep became the ninth woman in the top 10 seeds to be upset in the first week of Wimbledon, falling 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 to Hsieh Su-wei of Taiwan.
Who Stood Out
Iga Swiatek advanced to the third round with a convincing victory. Swiatek, the top seed, continued to display the exceptional form that has seen her dominate the tennis world recently. She won her second-round match against Zhu Lin of China 6-1, 6-3, despite a brief rain delay that required the roof to be closed on No. 1 Court.
Swiatek’s commitment to improving her game on grass, a surface where she has historically struggled, was evident. Known for her perfectionist mindset, she has been working hard to adapt her game to the grass courts of Wimbledon, where she has yet to progress past the fourth round in previous years. Day 4 Upsets
23rd seed Caroline Garcia suffered a disappointing loss, falling 6-3, 3-6, 4-6 to Bernarda Pera. Unfortunately, Garcia paid the price for making errors at critical moments during the match.
Katie Boulter was also the victim of an upset. She lost a close match to Harriet Dart 6-4, 1-6, 6-7, 8-10. The 32nd seed was also up 6-2 in the deciding set 10-point tiebreak, but she could not get over the line.
Yuriko Miyazaki was upset 0-6, 0-6 by Daria Kasatkina on Court 18. Competing with the recent Eastbourne International champion was always going to be difficult, and Miyazaki never came close to playing at the level she was capable of.
Best Match of the Day
No. 5 seed Jessica Pegula’s showdown with Wang Xinyu was the best women’s match on Day 4 of Wimbledon. World No. 42 Wang was a heavy underdog for this match-up. However, the Chinese player showed everyone watching that she was capable of firing multiple forehand winners on a very windy day in London. One break of serve was all she needed for the win of 6-3.
Pegula raised her game significantly. After several excellent rallies from both players, Wang served for the match at 6-5, but Pegula forced a tiebreak. She found herself down a match point at 6-7, but she produced three excellent points in a row to win it 9-7.
Looking Ahead
Looking ahead to Day 5, there are several exciting matches to watch in the women’s draw.
Iga Swiatek, the world number one, continues her campaign on the grass courts, looking to use her powerful topspin forehand to secure a win against Petra Martic.
Coco Gauff, the young American sensation, faces another challenging opponent as she hopes to build on her strong start to the tournament.
