From Turmoil to Triumph

The Afghan Women United team’s journey from fleeing the Taliban to playing in Morocco’s FIFA Unites Women’s Series is extraordinary. When the Taliban banned women’s sports in 2021, the players escaped their homeland and lived in exile.

Separated across Australia and Europe, they trained wherever they could and never gave up on football. Their return to the field was not only a comeback, it was an act of courage and defiance.

Making History at the FIFA Event

On October 26, 2025, goalkeeper Fatima Yousufi led her teammates onto the field in Morocco. It was their first international match since fleeing Afghanistan. The tournament was moved from Dubai after the team’s visas were denied, but they refused to be silenced.

They lost to Chad and Tunisia but finished strong with a 7–0 win against Libya. For them, every match carried meaning beyond the scoreboard. Yousufi, centerback Mursal Sadat, and captain Fatima Haidari played to honor Afghan women who can no longer play freely.

Impact Beyond the Pitch

Afghan Women United now stand as a symbol of strength and hope. “We will still fight this fight, because it’s about all the women in our country,” Sadat said.

FIFA’s decision to recognize them defied the Taliban-controlled Afghan Football Federation. It marked a milestone for women’s rights in sports. FIFA President Gianni Infantino praised their debut as “the beginning of a beautiful story.”

Yousufi called it “a powerful slap to the Taliban’s face, that we’re unstoppable.”

Reflections on Their Journey

Every moment on the field brought emotion and pride. “I cried because we are back after many years,” said Haidari. “We are fighting, and we had that spirit to be together.”

Yousufi once buried her football jersey and medals in her backyard to stay alive. Today, she plays again, proof that courage can outlast fear.

The Future: An Unstoppable Force

The team plans to compete in more international events and continue advocating for Afghan women. “Those girls in Afghanistan should dream,” Yousufi said. “Because those dreams scare the Taliban.”

Their mission now extends beyond sport. Afghan Women United play not just to win, but to remind the world that women cannot be erased.
