Ashlyn Watkins, the 6’3 forward, returned to the South Carolina Gamecocks last week. Ashlyn was facing a criminal charge for assault and kidnapping in late August this year. Following her arrest, the forward was dismissed from all team activities but could still attend classes.

In addition to missing out on team activities, she was unable to join the team on the visit to the White House on Sept. 10 for the Presidential Honor by President Biden following the team’s successful run to become the 2023-2024 NCAA champions.

Watkins Career Highlights

Watkins was named to the All-SEC second team in 2024 and became the third player in South Carolina Gamecocks history to have the highest number of blocks in a season at 91. She averaged 9.2 points, 280 rebounds, and 91 blocks in the 2023-2024 season. Her return completes the South Carolina squad once again who are already maintaining their unbeaten streak from last season. The team has registered wins in all its pre-conference exhibition and scrimmage games.

With her charges being dropped on Nov. 1, Ashlyn reportedly returned to the team and team practices. In an interview, Dawn Staley expressed her gratitude for the team’s return, making the roster complete once again after a two-month absence. The coach confirmed that she had been acclimated and they were working on getting her schedules back in sync with the team and back on the floor. Coach Staley also mentioned that the entire university, not just the team or sports department, is supporting Ashlyn and understands how tough it can be for a young athlete to go through what she experienced.

Gamecocks 2023-2024 Season

The Gamecocks completed the 2023-2024 season with a 38-0 record and won the national championship by beating Iowa. They became the 10th women’s basketball college team to ever win the tournament without a loss. One of the team’s greatest highlights in the unbeaten run season was in the last seconds win, with Kamilla Cardoso scoring her first 3-pointer shot against the Tennessee Volunteers to secure a 74-73 victory. Other teams that have hard unbeaten runs include; UConn Huskies with a six times record (40-0, 2013 -14; 39-0, 2001-02; 39-0, 2008-29; 39-0, 2009-10; 38-0, 2015-16; 35-0, 1994-95), Baylor Bears (40-0, 2011-12), Texas Longhorns (34-0, 1985-86), Tennessee Lady Vols (39-0, 1997-98).

Overwhelming Support

The entire university, not just the team, is backing Watkins and understanding the challenges she faced. This support is vital for her mental and emotional well-being, which in turn affects her performance.

Watkins’ journey and resilience serve as an inspiration to her teammates and young athletes. Her ability to overcome personal challenges and return to the game demonstrates strength and determination.

Overall, Watkins’ return is a boost for the Gamecocks, both on and off the court.
