The Trailblazing Journey of Autumn Lockwood
Lockwood’s journey into NFL coaching was built on a foundation of hard work and expertise in sports performance. After earning her degree in Exercise and Sports Science from the University of Arizona, she held strength and conditioning roles at East Tennessee State University and the University of Houston. Her performance coaching expertise led her to join the Atlanta Falcons through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, where she gained invaluable experience. In 2023, she joined the Eagles and made history as the first Black woman to coach at the Super Bowl, breaking barriers in a male-dominated sport.
Jennifer King: First Full-Time Black Female Assistant Coach
Jennifer King paved the way for women in the NFL when she became the first Black female full-time assistant coach in 2015. As an offensive assistant for the Washington Commanders, King demonstrated the critical contributions women can make on the field. Her tactical expertise and leadership earned her recognition as a pioneer in professional football, setting a precedent for others like Lockwood.
Collette V. Smith: Defensive Coaching Pioneer
Collette V. Smith made history as the first Black female coach for the New York Jets in 2017. Serving as a defensive backs coach during the preseason, Smith shattered stereotypes about who could lead in defensive roles. Her work extended beyond the field as she became a vocal advocate for diversity and inclusion in sports.
Lockwood’s Lasting Impact
Lockwood’s role in Super Bowl LVII was not just a personal achievement, but a symbol of progress for the entire league. Her success amplifies the message that women, especially Black women, belong to the highest levels of sports coaching. Together with King and Smith, she inspires future generations to pursue careers in sports leadership.
