Who is Sydney Leroux?

Sydney Leroux is a Canadian-born American whose talent and athletic abilities have made her one of the most dangerous forwards at the U-20 level and an Olympic gold medalist. Leroux is also the U.S.’s highest scorer and the most capped player at that level.

The Future of the League

In Leroux’s interview with USA Today Sports, she describes the differences she’s seen in the NWSL since she’s played. She speaks on how the league is getting the recognition it deserves. “We really built this league off the backs of the NWSL players, the US women’s international team players and internationals,” Leroux stated. Leroux added, “We had nothing. We didn’t have locker rooms, we didn’t have anything. Now we have state-of-the-art facilities and that’s exactly what we deserve.”

History of the NWSL

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) was established in 2012 as the successor to Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS; 2007–2012), which was itself the successor to the Women’s United Soccer Association (WUSA; 2000–2003). When the league started, it consisted of eight teams; by 2024, it had 14 teams.

A Bright Future

The NWSL has made so much progress in growing the league since 2013. Star players like Leroux continued to break records, compete, and inspire people watching. The league is set to add two more teams by 2026. There is no doubt that players like Leroux, who played in the NWSL back in 2013, have elevated the league and gotten people’s attention. Leroux is in great spirits about the future of the NWSL.
