When it comes to someone who is bold and ready to stake everything on women’s sports, it is Alexis Ohanian. He has become a champion of women’s sports, relentlessly investing in them. The Reddit co-founder has courageously stepped into areas once thought too risky—investing in women’s sports. His latest investment is his stake in Chelsea FC Women in the Barclays Women’s Super League.

Alexis and Angel City FC

Angel City FC competes in the National Women’s Soccer League. The team’s inaugural season was in 2022, following talks of its formation that stretched as far back as 2020. The team, whose largest co-founders were female—Natalie Portman, Kara Nortman, and Julie Uhrman—was later sold to Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, for $250 million. At the time of its purchase, Alexis Ohanian was the leading stakeholder in the club and, more importantly, the team’s representative on the league’s board of governors. He continues to serve on the boards, and his vocal support for women’s sports is evident in his posts and conversations. He champions women’s sports and explains why it is a profitable field that deserves investment. In a post on LinkedIn, he stated, “Fun-fact: when launching the team, I invested $250K separately in a trust for all of Serena and my children, which has now made our girls not just the youngest owners in pro sports — but also now multi-millionaires.”

Stake in Chelsea

The Barclays Women’s Super League just concluded last week, with Chelsea Women winning the title for the eighth time and for the sixth consecutive season from 2019-2020 to 2024-2025. Alexis’s decision to purchase a 10% stake in the club, estimated at £20 million, serves as a boost to the club and a testament to the growth of women’s sports. He will join the board and become a key decision-maker for the team. He took to his Instagram to post, “I’ve bet big on women’s sports before – and I am doing it again. I’m proud to announce that I’m joining Chelsea Women’s football club as an investor and board member. I’m honored for the chance to help this iconic club become America’s favorite Barclays WSL team and much more.”

Women Sports

The ongoing positive growth of women’s sports on the right trajectory has become a testament to the value of investing in women’s sports. Chelsea and Angel City FC are just two of the thousands of women’s teams available, and the situation will only improve if more people invest in and support women’s sports.
