Amy Nnenna Okonkwo was born in California and holds dual American-Nigerian nationality. For college, she played at USC in her freshman year before transferring to TCU, where she earned Big 12 Sixth Player of the Year honors in 2018.

At the recently concluded Women’s Afrobasketball games, she was named the MVP, an accolade she has bagged for two consecutive appearances at the tournament.

Professional Experience European Success

Amy turned professional in 2019, and since then, she has played in several international leagues. These include leagues in Spain, Israel, and Mexico, and most recently, she played with France’s La Boulangère Wonderligue for Bourges.

In 2023, she played for Landerneau in the same French League,  where she averaged 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.5 steals per game with efficient shooting: 82.2% from the line and 36.3% from beyond the arc.

In 2024, she signed with the prestigious Bourges club, solidifying her position among the elite in European women’s basketball.

Dominance With Nigeria’s D’Tigress

Continental MVP Awards

Okonkwo has been named the continental MVP twice, establishing herself as a key player for the Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress. She also competed with the team in both the 2020 Tokyo and 2024 Paris Olympics.

At the 2023 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket, she was named MVP and selected to the All-Tournament Team. She posted an impressive average of 17.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.

Two years later, at the 2025 AfroBasket in Abidjan, Amy delivered a stellar performance in the final. She scored 19 points and was among Nigeria’s top contributors to the 78-64 victory over Mali. Nigeria secured a historic fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship.

Knocking at the WNBA Door

In February 2025, Amy signed a training camp contract with the Connecticut Sun, alongside fellow LFB standout Kariata Diaby. Unfortunately, she didn’t make the final roster, but those experiences continue to shape her into the formidable player she has become on the continent.

Amy Okonkwo’s Uniqueness

She is a versatile scoring threat both around the basket and from outside, with high shooting efficiency.

Her international experience has equipped her with a proven performance across multiple global leagues and competitions.

And there’s no doubt that Amy is on a continued upward trajectory as she continues to make headlines in one of Europe’s top leagues, Olympic representation, continental championship, and WNBA opportunities.
