Caitlin Foley, assistant coach for the American University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams, has been chosen for support through the Women’s Sports Foundation’s Tara VanDerveer Fund for the Advancement of Women in Coaching. The grant provides resources and opportunities to help her grow as a collegiate coach.
Who is Caitlin Foley?
Caitlin Foley is an assistant coach at American University. She works with the individual medley and mid-distance stroke groups. Foley joined the Eagles’ staff in the 2023–24 season.
Before joining AU, she coached at The Catholic University of America. There, she helped both the men’s and women’s teams win conference championships.
Her background as a swimmer is equally impressive. She competed for Kenyon College, earning six All-American honors and serving as team captain in her senior year. Foley also qualified for multiple NCAA Championships and contributed to several top team finishes.
The Significance of the Grant
The Tara VanDerveer Fund grant represents a meaningful opportunity for Foley to advance her career in collegiate coaching. The program aims to close the gender gap in coaching by supporting women early in their professional journeys through mentorship, networking, and skill development. Recipients are encouraged to attend professional development events and the annual Women’s Sports Foundation Salute to Women in Sports gala.
Historical Context and Impact
Since its creation, the VanDerveer Fund has made a significant impact in increasing the number of women in coaching roles nationwide. Among the first five classes of fellows, many have moved into head coaching or leadership positions, underscoring the fund’s importance in building pathways for women leaders in athletics. Foley’s selection marks the first time an American University coach has received this distinction.
What Lies Ahead for Foley?
With this support, Foley will continue developing her coaching expertise and leadership at American University while pursuing additional growth opportunities through conferences and training programs. Balancing her full-time work as an E-Learning Coordinator with her coaching duties, Foley remains dedicated to mentoring student-athletes and advancing women’s representation in coaching.
Inspiring Future Generations
Foley’s journey from standout collegiate swimmer to assistant coach demonstrates her commitment to both sport and education. Through the Women’s Sports Foundation’s grant, she continues to serve as an example for young athletes and aspiring female coaches, showing that leadership and excellence extend far beyond the pool.
