The 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), hosted in Morocco from July 5 to 26, was more than just a soccer tournament. It was a celebration of resilience, talent, and progress in African women’s sports as a whole. From upsets in the group stages like Zambia’s early poor performance to Nigeria’s exciting comeback in the final, here are the most memorable moments of the tournament.

Group Stage Drama

Zambia’s Blazing Start and Early Dismal

Zambia made their intentions clear in the opening minutes of the tournament. Captain Barbra Banda scored just 43 seconds into their first match against Tunisia. This became the fastest goal in WAFCON history. She added a second later in the match, leading Zambia to a 3–1 win and showing she remains one of Africa’s elite strikers. However, the team was eliminated at the quarterfinals as they couldn’t forge against the Super Falcons in a 5-0 game.

Mali’s Surprise Run

Mali, which usually ended at group stages in the previous nations, stunned Group C by holding South Africa to a 2-2 draw and defeating Algeria 1-0. Despite not being favorites, they showed tenacity and strong defense, earning a spot in the quarterfinals.

Morocco’s Clean Sweep

As hosts, Morocco faced immense pressure while also enjoying home advantage. They topped their group with three wins out of three. Ghizlane Chebbak was in good form, scoring twice and assisting in other games, to help Morocco qualify for the knockouts without conceding a single goal in the group stage.

Knockout Stage Thrills

Ghana’s Penalty Heartbreak

Ghana appeared poised to reach the semifinals but was held to a 1-1 draw by Morocco in a tight quarterfinal match. The game went to penalties, where Morocco’s goalkeeper Khadija Er-Rmichi saved two shots, eliminating Ghana and sending the hosts to their first-ever WAFCON final.

Nigeria Ends South Africa’s Title Defense

South Africa entered as defending champions, but Nigeria aimed to restore its glory. Rasheedat Ajibade scored an early penalty, and the Super Falcons held their lead until the 91st minute, when Michelle Alozie secured the win with a slick counterattack. That 2–1 victory ended Banyana Banyana’s reign and highlighted Nigeria’s desire to reclaim its glory.

Standout Individual Performances

Esther Okoronkwo scored when it mattered most despite not having a scoring start in the group stages. She delivered in the semifinal and exploded in the final with a goal and two assists, earning Player of the Tournament honors.

Goalkeeper Awards

Nigeria’s Chiamaka Nnadozie made key saves against South Africa and in the final, proving again why she’s one of the top keepers on the continent. She currently plays for Brighton and Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League.

Culture, Fans and Atmosphere

This edition of WAFCON, like the previous editions, was a cultural showcase. Although the stadiums weren’t filled, especially during the group stages, the tournament set a record for attendance. The atmosphere was electric with fans waving flags, dancing to drums, and singing chants. Teams also made an impression with chants and dancing as they arrived at the stadium for games.

Broadcasts reached over 100 million viewers, with women’s football gaining more mainstream attention than ever before in Africa.

Investment and Progress

CAF announced a 45% boost in prize money, with the winners earning $1 million. CAF also pledged to host the next WAFCON in Cameroon (2027), promising additional investment in women’s football infrastructure and media coverage.

In Conclusion

WAFCON 2025 was more than just a tournament; it was a defining chapter in the growth of African women’s football. From Banda’s lightning goal to Morocco’s emotional journey and Nigeria’s powerful resurgence, the continent witnessed passion, pain, and glory.

African women’s football is not the future; it’s the present.
