Breaking Barriers: The Legacy of Yolanda Laney in Sports and Service

She holds the distinction of being the only player from a historically Black university to earn All-American honors. Laney’s impact was further solidified when she was named the Most Outstanding Player of the East Regional in the NCAA tournament. Her influence extended beyond her remarkable college career, leaving a lasting mark in the professional basketball world as well.

Due to Laney’s profound impact on women’s sports, a street in Philadelphia was fittingly named “Yolanda Laney – Basketball Way.” This honor not only gives Laney the well-deserved recognition for her contributions, but also stands as a lasting tribute to her legacy. The street is a constant reminder of her dedication to the game and her role in inspiring future generations of female athletes.
Part of the Cheyney Coaching Staff
Laney had many achievements outside of basketball. For instance, she graduated from Rutgers Law School and became a practicing attorney. She went on to become Atlantic City’s chief municipal public defender. However, Laney did not stop there in making a difference in this world. She went on to pursue her calling as a coach at Cheyney University. When Laney played ball, it was for the Cheyney Women’s Basketball program which makes the coaching job extra special for her. Laney states in an interview, “It’s a great feeling I have coaching at my alma mater, and coaching the students and athletes here because I am ‘Cheyney Made.”
