The NHL’s Global Impact

The National Hockey League (NHL) is extending its global reach by hosting Bardha Uka, a 33-year-old delegate from Pristina, Kosovo. She is part of the U.S. Department of State’s Global Sports Mentoring Program, a partnership with espnW and the University of Tennessee.

Now in its 12th year, this program connects 13 international women leaders with mentors across professional sports. By participating, the NHL reinforces its commitment to inclusion and empowerment. It also highlights the League’s growing influence beyond hockey rinks and into broader efforts that support women worldwide.

Mentorship as a Catalyst

At the heart of this initiative is mentorship. Bardha Uka, a former competitive swimmer and co-founder of DemSport (Democracy Through Sport), brings a passion for equality in athletics. Her nonprofit advocates for equal access to sports and gender-sensitive policies across Kosovo.

During her time at NHL headquarters in New York City from October 6 to 24, Uka learned directly from League executives. She also developed an action plan to promote gender equality in sport leadership back home. Afterward, she attended the espnW: Women + Sports Summit in California before presenting her plan in Washington, D.C.

Building on a Strong Foundation

Kosovo already has an active sports community that is eager to grow. However, women remain underrepresented in the governance of its 37 international sports federations. Uka’s mission is to change that.

This focus comes at a crucial time. Kosovo will host the 2030 Mediterranean Games in Pristina from July 24 to August 4. For the smallest country in the Balkans, this event represents both progress and pride. Moreover, it showcases Kosovo’s commitment to building a modern, inclusive sporting culture.

A Future of Empowerment and Growth

Returning home, Uka said she feels inspired to help other women find their voice. “I want to go back and work with women to empower them,” she shared. “I know I will use this experience.”

Her story is a reminder that mentorship can spark real change. Through her work, more women in Kosovo can access leadership roles, influence sports policy, and inspire younger generations. Step by step, Uka is turning her personal story into a nationwide movement.

The Broader Impact

The NHL’s involvement in the Global Sports Mentoring Program goes beyond individual success. It creates a ripple effect, each woman mentored can empower many more. As more female athletes and leaders rise, they help transform perceptions of what women can achieve in sports.

Ultimately, this collaboration proves that progress happens when opportunity and mentorship meet. With leaders like Bardha Uka and partners like the NHL, women’s sports in Kosovo have a brighter and more inclusive future ahead.
