All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN) will launch a dedicated 24-hour women’s sports channel in Saudi Arabia on Friday in partnership with the Saudi Arabian Football Federation and national broadcaster Saudi Sports Company.
AWSN, co-founded by Oscar-winning actor and comedian Whoopi Goldberg, was launched late last year as the first global media channel dedicated exclusively to showcasing women’s sports.
The new channel, “SSC AWSN,” will be available in Saudi Arabia through the MBC Shahid streaming platform, an AWSN spokesperson told Reuters.
Revolutionizing Women’s Sports Coverage
The launch comes with the Saudi Women’s Premier League season, which will now air locally and worldwide for the first time.
Each week, the channel will show a prime-time Premier League match. It will also carry UEFA events and other women’s leagues.
Setting New Standards in Broadcast Excellence
AWSN plans to showcase Saudi women’s sports while also bringing international competitions to audiences in the kingdom.
“Our goal is to break barriers and deliver unmatched coverage,” said George Chung, AWSN CEO and co-founder.
Historical Context and Progress
For years, girls in Saudi schools could not play sports, and women were barred from stadiums until 2018.
Princess Reema Bandar Al Saud, now the Saudi ambassador to the U.S., helped drive reforms that opened doors for women’s participation.
Impact on the Regional and Global Stages
Princess Reema praised the growth of the Women’s Premier League, which now includes players from more than 20 nationalities.
“Now, fans abroad will watch them live,” she said.
Aalia Al Rasheed, head of women’s football at the federation, said the broadcasts will give players global recognition.
Saudi Sports Company CEO Amill Lone added that the partnership supports Vision 2030 by giving women’s sports a global platform.
Inspiring the Next Generation
The channel will bring consistent visibility for female athletes, inspiring more young girls to join sports across the kingdom.
It reflects Saudi Arabia’s rapid progress in women’s sports and signals a new era of recognition for female athletes worldwide.
