Baylor Volleyball, Women’s Sports Find Foundation In 1981 Move To NCAA

In Baylor volleyball’s early days, resources were scarce. Players and staff often drove their own vans to tournaments across Texas and beyond, staying in budget motels and celebrating small comforts like having a TV in their room. Despite limited facilities and staff, the athletes’ dedication carried the program forward.

Historical Context: Making the Move to NCAA

In 1981, Baylor’s women’s sports including volleyball, transitioned from the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) to the NCAA. While the change didn’t immediately bring better facilities or more funding, it marked a pivotal moment that opened new doors for women athletes to compete on equal footing with men. Former student athletic trainer Pam Rast recalled how Title IX and the NCAA shift created career opportunities that wouldn’t have existed otherwise.

Volleyball: Setting the Stage for Success

During this transition, Baylor volleyball players like Ann Blockhus Martin found themselves competing against powerhouse programs such as the University of Texas, which already had established, well-funded teams. Even without the same resources, Baylor’s athletes embraced the challenge, gaining valuable experience and setting the foundation for future success.

Growth and Achievements

It took nearly two decades after joining the NCAA for Baylor to make its first tournament appearance, followed by more in 2001, 2009, and 2011. Under current head coach Ryan McGuyre, the program has transformed into a consistent contender, reaching nine straight NCAA tournaments and a national semifinal in 2019 as the No. 1 overall seed.

Inspirational Leadership and Notable Alumni

McGuyre’s leadership has been praised for shaping athletes into both strong players and leaders. Veterans from the 1981 team, like Martin, admire how far the program has come since their time playing in a shared gymnastics gym. Their legacy continues through lasting connections among generations of Baylor volleyball alumni.

Elevating Women’s Sports at Baylor

The 1981 NCAA move also strengthened women’s sports campus-wide. Today, Baylor’s female athletes compete in top-tier facilities: volleyball in the Ferrell Center, women’s basketball in Foster Pavilion, and softball in Getterman Stadium, a far cry from the shared spaces of the past. Martin reflected on this evolution, noting how “women in sports have come leaps and bounds as to where we were.”

A Path Forward

More than 40 years later, Baylor volleyball’s progress continues to inspire. The journey from borrowed gyms to national tournaments showcases not just athletic achievement but also the power of perseverance and opportunity born from the 1981 transition.
