The United States Takes the Victory

Claire Hutton scored her first international goal, along with goals from Sam Coffey and Yazmeen Ryan, leading the United States to a 3-0 victory over Canada on Wednesday night. This win marks the fifth straight friendly the Americans have won, with an impressive 18-0 combined score since their loss to Brazil in early April. Hutton, at 19, scored in the 36th minute, giving the U.S. a 2-0 lead, while Ryan sealed the win in the 89th minute.

This was the third game in seven days for the U.S., following two 4-0 wins against Ireland. Coach Emma Hayes made 10 changes to the starting lineup from the second game against Ireland. Hayes praised the team for maintaining high standards and executing their game plan effectively. Lynn Biyendolo had early chances but missed the net on one and had a header saved by Canadian goalie Kailen Sheridan.

The Game Overview

The U.S. took the lead in the 17th minute after Rose Lavelle’s free kick caused chaos in Canada’s penalty area. Janine Sonis’ attempted clearance led to a scramble where Avery Patterson and Coffey both made contact with the ball, which ended up in the net. Coffey was credited with the goal, and Patterson got the assist. Coach Hayes praised Coffey’s outstanding form, noting her continuous improvement.

Later, the U.S. extended their lead from a corner kick by Lavelle, with Hutton heading the ball in after Canada left her unmarked. Goalkeeper Claudia Dickey, fresh off a shutout against Ireland, made a crucial save against Jordyn Huitema.

Lavelle received a standing ovation when she was substituted in the second half, and local player Tara McKeown from the Washington Spirit was cheered as she came on, assisting Ryan’s goal. The U.S. will next play friendlies against South Korea on Sept. 6 in New Jersey and Japan on Sept. 9 in Ohio.
