Women in Football Kick (GL)ass, presented by Dr. Jenn Welter, is a groundbreaking exhibit that tells the untold stories of women in football. It explores the remarkable journeys of women who have defied expectations, shattered glass ceilings and left an indelible mark on the sport; theirs are the strong shoulder pads the game is built on today.

Women in Football Historic Journey

The immersive exhibit showcasing the contributions and achievements of women in football is captivating visitors in New Orleans at the beautiful Longue Vue House and Gardens. It will run through March 2025 and highlight the trailblazers, pioneers and rising stars who have shaped the sport, broken barriers and redefined the game at all levels.

Honoring the Past, Inspiring the Future

From early pioneers who defied societal norms to modern-day players, coaches and executives making strides in professional and collegiate football, the showcase offers a compelling narrative of perseverance, skill and passion.

Memorabilia, interactive displays and rare photographs illustrate the evolution of women’s roles in the sport. Visitors can explore artifacts from legendary figures, including jerseys, playbooks and personal mementos, giving a behind-the-scenes look at their careers and contributions.

Spotlight on Today’s Game Changers

In addition to celebrating history, the exhibit also focuses on contemporary figures making waves in football today. Highlighting women who have excelled as coaches, referees, analysts and front-office executives, the display shines a light on their impact and the progress made toward greater inclusion in the sport.

While the NFL Super Bowl at Caesars Superdome is across town, Longue Vue House teaches about the women who play tackle football. The exhibit features helmets, jerseys and educational panels throughout the historic house museum.

Fans can hear directly from influential figures like Sarah Thomas, the NFL’s first female official, Dr. Jen Welter, the NFL’s first female coach and other leading women who continue to push boundaries.

“These women need to be known because no one knows about these great women,” Dr. Jen Welter said at the exhibit opening Wednesday, which was National Girls & Women in Sports Day. “We’ll continue to tell their stories.”

Dr. Jen Welter First Female NFL Coach

Dr. Jen Welter was a defensive coaching intern for the National Football League‘s Arizona Cardinals during their training camp and the 2015 preseason, making her the first female coaching intern in the NFL. Welter was named the linebacker and special teams coach by the Champions Indoor Football’s Texas Revolution. The year prior, she was signed by the Revolution as a running back. This made her the second female player for a position other than a kicker or placekick-holder on a men’s professional football team and the first running back. Dr. Welter is the second woman after ice hockey player Hayley Wickenheiser to play a “contact” position in a male-dominated sport and the first woman in football to do so.

Welter played on the 2010 U.S. women’s national team. “This was the first time that, in America’s game, we got to put on the red, white and blue and truly be America’s team,” she said. The original 45 women went to compete in the International Federation of American Football World.

A Must-See for Football Enthusiasts

The Women in Football exhibit is not just for die-hard fans but for anyone inspired by stories of resilience and achievement. By recognizing women’s contributions to the sport, the exhibit aims to educate and inspire the next generation of athletes and leaders.

With its captivating displays and compelling storytelling, the exhibit is a must-visit destination in New Orleans until March 2025. Whether you’re a seasoned football fan or just discovering the game, this tribute to women’s contributions to football provides an enriching and inspirational experience.
